Right so, straight from the bat I enjoyed his debut, Thrift Shop. It contradicted the medias mundane promotion of Gucci, Gucci, Fendi, Fendi, Prada. Playing around and letting the world know that it’s also cool to be vintage and rock not so popular brands. Lets face it, we don’t all have money to blow for those items but never the less, Macklemore showed us how to look super dope with money to spare lol.
His next hit with Cant Hold Us, had a triumphant appeal motivating the world to do whatever it is they want to do and to carry on through adversity. I love his lyrical flow and the fact that he breaks the mold, consciously rapping, spreading useful insights and ideas in a time where music seems to be leading the younger generation astray.
His latest song, Same Love is based on a constant controversial subject, homosexuality. In this song Macklemore shares his views on the narrow minded problem the world still face excepting the same gendered relationships. Macklemore makes it clear that we are all equal and we all love the same so homosexuality should not be looked at any different from heterosexuality. We should not want to change to fit in with societies unrealistic terms, we are who we are. I’m loving Macklemore because he is changing the modern conventions of rap and playfully challenging the common ideologies that rap music has to offer. Being himself and doing his own thing no matter how stereotypically cool it may not be, I feel like I can relate. In a place where being yourself is frowned upon I feel like he successfully reinforces hope for this generation, plus in the words of ASAP Rocky “The white boy can spit”!
